甲骨文字の形は人が寝台（「爿」）の上で寝ている様を象る象形文字で、「爿」の代わりに「夕」を加えて「夢」の字体となる^{[字源 1]}。「ゆめ」を意味する漢語｛夢 /*məngs/｝を表す字。
