Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. In one proposed etymology the Ancient Greek name comes from the (unattested) Egyptian name for the island, corresponding to Coptic ⲫⲁⲣⲉϩ (phareh, “the guard”) = ⲫ- (ph-, the) +‎ ⲁⲣⲉϩ (areh, guard);[1]
