From Proto-Semitic *walad-. Compare Arabic وَلَد (walad, child), وَلَدَ (walada, to give birth), Ge'ez ወልድ (wäld, child).

  1. A (male) child, a (male) kid, a boy: a young (male) person.
  2. (specifically) A son: a person's (male) offspring or occasionally, kin. (The exception in plural form is indicated below.)
