Likely a borrowing from a language spoken East of Canaan, related to Middle Persian [script needed] (kpyk' /⁠kabīg⁠/, monkey) and perhaps ultimately from Sanskrit कपि (kapi, ape, monkey). Monkeys are not native to the region of Canaan.
