- As a German and Dutch surname, from the noun Hecke (“hedge”).
- Also as a Dutch surname, shortened from Van den Haag, a name derived from the Hague.
- As a south German and Alemannic German surname (and Swedish adoption of it), from the personal name Hago, from a derivative of Proto-West Germanic *haggju (“hedge”) and thus related to the first sense.
