Etymology[edit]

A user suggests that this English entry be cleaned up, giving the reason: “Russian, Arabic and Chinese use non-Latin alphabets, so how can they change to 'Türkiye'? The WP article doesn't say anything about UN languages. It does say that the request also applies to French and German (the latter of which is not a UN language). So please clarify: What is the Turkish request? What did the UN decide?”.
Please see the discussion on Requests for cleanup(+) or the talk page for more information and remove this template after the problem has been dealt with.

Unadapted borrowing from Turkish Türkiye. First adopted in 2020 by the Turkish Exporters Assembly and then by the Turkish government in December 2021 to replace the exonyms of Turkey in other languages. In English, the change has been attributed to confusion with the noun senses of the homonym turkey.[1] In June 2022, the United Nations accepted the country's request to change its official name there in the UN languages.[2]

  • The officially prescribed all caps form is TÜRKİYE, with a dotted capital İ.
  • The word remains rare outside of Turkish sources or official contexts, such as when referring to the country by its full official name (Republic of Türkiye).
