Etymology[edit]

From earlier hērōro, comparative form of hēr (gray-haired, old; noble, venerable), from Proto-Germanic *hairaz (grey; old, distinguished). Compare the same semantic development from Latin senior to Old French seignor, whence the feudal meaning was loaned to Old High German in Carolingian times.
