Etymology[edit]
From Palātium (“Palatine Hill”), one of the seven hills of Rome, where aristocrats built large homes,
Either from:
- Etruscan 𐌚𐌀𐌋𐌀𐌃𐌖𐌌 (faladum, “sky”), the same source as Palēs (“Pales, the Italic goddess of shepherds, flocks and livestock”);
- pālus (“stake; enclosure”).
