代名詞

1. （ごく稀）二人称単数の主格形。汝。

   現代英語ではこの単語はごく稀に、

   • イングランド、スコットランドの方言（一部,tha,thooと発音される）
   • キリスト教で神に言及するとき
   • クエーカー
   • 擬古文
     • "Thou art the man"（=You are the man）

       汝、其の人なり

       欽定訳聖書サムエル記下12．7に見える言葉。「（他でもない）あなたがその人なのだ」と言う場合に使用。エドガー・アラン・ポーの1844年の作品タイトルにもなっており、「お前が犯人だ」等と和訳されている。

   などで用いる。

活用

thouをとる場合は動詞に現在形-(e)st,過去形-(e)stをつける。不規則動詞の場合は過去形で幹母音を変化させる。(e)はつづりの揺れで加えたり加えなかったりするもので語幹の音によって使い分けるのではない。

1. thyとthine,myとmineの使い分けには以下の2通りある。
   1. 母音で始まる単語の前ではthine,mineのnのつくほうを用いる
   2. 修飾する名詞のない所有代名詞ではthine,mine,所有格ではthy,myを用いる
2. 中英語の早期ではhisがitの所有格も兼ねていたが新しく出来たitsに取って代わられた。欽定訳聖書に両用法が見られる。
